April 25th is DNA Day, and Teresa Robeson of One Good Thing has challenged WordPress artists to celebrate their DNA on the 25th of every month with a self portrait. So here’s a picture of my face!
I’ve always had a tough time with self portraits, or with portraits of real people in general. It’s always much easier to design a character from scratch than it is to try and capture the look of a real person, especially when that person is yourself. The day I drew it I kept coming back and fixing, tweaking, messing around with it, but I’m pretty happy with the end product.
April 23rd is the day traditionally celebrated as William Shakespeare’s birthday! (And also the 400th anniversary of his death, but that’s not as happy). Shakespeare has been a huge part of my life for many years. My mom is an English major and former teacher, and she brought us up on Shakespeare’s plays from a young age. We read them together, write about them, go to see them, and occasionally even perform in them. Because of that, it was hard to pick just one image to celebrate the amazing Bard of Stratford.
Ultimately, I chose to do a poster-like painting of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was the first Shakespeare play that I ever read, the first one I saw live, and my sister played Helena in a Shakespeare workshop with our theatre group. This story of fairies, enchanted forests, and the rocky road of love has a very special place in my heart. 🙂
Another drawing for #doodlewashaday
Happy National Barber Shop Quartet Day! Of course, I had to recognize this day with a little portrait of Disney’s Dapper Dans, but I can’t let this day go by without a Music Man reference as well. Ice creeeeeeeeeam!
April 8th is Draw a Picture of a Bird Day! Charlie at Doodlewash, Laura at Create Art Everyday, and Kerfe and Nina at Method Two Madness have all put out the challenge to draw a fine feathered friend, so this is my contribution. I’ll also be putting out a few more drawings to commemorate little-known national holidays throughout the month of April for Charlie’s #doodlewashaday challenge, so keep an eye out for those. 🙂
For some reason it took me a really long time to decide what bird I wanted to draw. I finally decided on my state bird, the cardinal. These feisty little red guys always make me feel at home. 🙂 Reference.
